Frank Herbert’s seminal novel about the political workings of the planet of Arrakis, its Spice production and the various religious beliefs has long been considered both Hollywood’s most coveted adaptation and its most impossible. The book has been attempted for both the big and small screen but those attempts have not been very successful. The David Lynch version is fun for what it is, but is a "so bad it’s good" kind of thing. The Syfy version is not even the fun kind of bad. Then there’s the infamous Alejandro Jodorowsky version which might be the greatest movie never made. Luckily, director Denis Villeneuve of Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival and Blade Runner: 2049 fame has stepped up to bat and produced a worthy take on Herbert’s masterpiece. While this is a great day for fans of the series, Arrakis can be a hostile place for newcomers. This is especially true when it comes to the main character’s cryptic predictions that foretell the plot of the sequel that was luckily just announced. At first, these are just about Zendaya’s Chani and his inevitable affair with her. Later on, he foresees the fall of his father’s House but it isn’t enough to stop it from coming to pass. After he lands on Arrakis, the visions just increase in severity due to the mind altering Spice Melange that flows through the planet. He then sees a more brutal conflict that will see him lead the Fremen to possibly destroy the evil Harkonnens, depose the Emperor and unite the galaxy under this messiah’s rule.
