I am blind, but my crusts are hasty.
I do wonder why it would apply the encrustment the moment I slide in the mace.
Whatever.
Still works and it's goods.

One note: getting lots of little damage is great.
Dealing one damage a lot is bad.
Like, WAY bad.
The kind of bad you'd expect from a car accident into a nuclear waste truck.
Why is it? For example, some have NEGATIVE resistance, in which case that little bit becomes more! :D
Let's do some analysis with Doctor Math.
As fun as lots of damage is, it's not productive. Enemies tend to have random defences, against what they're made off, or logical stuff (aka, robots don't choke (just 10 resistance though)).
Even then, there's ARMOUR and HEALTH you need to keep track of. And, of course, their ability to beat the living pulp out of you. Wait, there's also dodging, countering and blocking. Since your highest damage will ALWAYS BE (for warriors and rogues) stoppable by armour (and most dudes have piercing too), you're going to feel a dent in your sword.

Let's take a decent chap like Brax (WITHOUT his debt collectors) and Dredmor, the big bad.

Brax does 10 crush and gets 17 melee bonus, so 27 crush. 27 armour is needed. You won't get that. Trust me. Very hard. Maybe with some crush resistance to help. So you'll have to take pain. 29% crit chance? That's 44 damage right there. Stop that without a dodge or a block and you're amazing. Crits also bypass blocks and dodge... ouch. That's effectively, 37 damage per hit, crits included, but without your ability to block normal shots.
Brax has 121 health and 6 armour. 32% block chance, 18 dodge, 12 accuracy (aka you get -12 dodge) and 37 magic resistance. Damn, he's not that good, right? Well, the Dred collectors are there to help. So don't get fancy.
He has no resistances, so he's doing just fine.

Now Dredmor.
The big boy. He's gotta be tough, right? He is. WAY up there.
375 health, 20 armour, 10 fire/frost/rotting/transmutative/lightning resistance, 5 piercing, 20 necromantic and asphyxiative and 15 existential.
He deals... 4 blasting, 10 crush, 10 necromantic and 10 transmutative ouch-pain, his 25 melee boost excluded.
He has a 58% chance to stop pain, 37% to avoid pain and 27% to return pain for free. With 60 magic stopping resistance and lots of spells, he is OUCH.

So, let's say you're awesome with blades and have the best sword in the game. The monofiliment sword, which deals 50 slashy.
There's another dude with the Emerald, which deals 10 pierce, 15 holy and 25 slash, with 5 necro defence.

You have... let's say 15 melee buff. Great! That's 80 damage with crits.
But you suck regardless. That's 60 damage with his armour stopping you. With CRITS. Without, you'll deal a lousy 45. Hey, that's just 8 hits! But wait. When you melee, he makes your shit go corrupt. Woops. Of course, you can't have a lot of armour, so he'll just smack you around a bit with his staff, teleport and use a Thor's Fulminaric Bolt. That's 14+52 blasting and 22+29 electric damage.
It's unlikely you have more than 200 health.
You are now dead.

What did I just prove? Mostly that Dredmor is a man's genital slang, but also that weapons aren't everything. You need items, like potions and wands, to carry you through. So drink that wand and polish that potion, and be a proud adventurer!
Well, high damage is fine, but each archetype needs a compensator.
Warriors: stun/confuse, anytihng that stops Dredmor from corrupting your stuff. Better, have a silver shield and just return his spells right back at him.
Rogues: Magic defence. Your ass is not going to have a lot of that, unless your equipment is built on it. Preferably, you can avoid him altogether.
Mages: Health, or just something to absorb magic. You'll need the mana.

That said, any enemy can be tackled with the following items at hand (for survival):
- Potions for recovery.
- Invisibility. Run, recover, return! The three most Heroic Guerilla Rs.
- Something to give your resistance a buff. One and enemy hits you, you're told WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE YOU DID GET HIT WITH. Knowing is half the battle. The other half is having the right stuff and cheating with it.
- Emergency escape. Like #2, only if you're fucked and prefer running over losing.
- A Fuck-Your-Day-Up item. Here's a few quickies: Bolt of Mass Destruction, Bolt of Squid, Acid Bottle Bolt, The Bomb, Holy Hand Grenade, Hand Grenade, Tentacular Wand and the Bony Wand if you have corpses and/or need a meat shield.
