Information about Pokemon Fire Red (German):
Pokemon is one of the largest and most successful media franchises of all-time, and it all started in 1996 in Japan with Pokemon Red and Green. Released in the West as Pokemon Red and Blue, this first generation of games created a pop-culture movement that lasts until the present day, with mega sales in the world of anime, trading cards, merchandising—and over 120 different video games!
The version we are playing today in this Let’s Play is Pokemon Feuerrot (Pokemon Fire Red in German), which was released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance. As an enhanced remake of the original Pokemon Red game, it follows the same storyline as the original Pokemon Red but with improved graphics, sounds, and a variety of quality-of-life improvements.
As a kid, I loved the feeling of playing the Pokemon games. There was something so exciting about exploring a new world, finding strange new places and creatures, and always trying to improve. In a way, some of the things I loved about Pokemon are the same things that I love about learning languages. Practicing German has also given me the opportunity to explore new places, to encounter new things, and to constantly try to improve. It’s been a ton of fun to combine both of these and to learn German with Pokemon (because we’re always, all of us, learning, and none of us are ever finished).
One of the really fun things about playing Pokemon Fire Red in German is getting to know the German Pokemon names. The localization team behind Pokemon Feuerrote Edition decided to give local and versions for a number of the Pokemon that appear in this game. Squirtle becomes Schiggy, Butterfree becomes Smettbo, and our very own Charmander becomes Glumanda. This provides a lot of fun, a unique feeling, and occasionally the opportunity for humor (I hereby apologize for all of the Piepi jokes contained in Learn German Let’s Play Pokemon Feuerrot.)!
I hope you enjoy this game and watching this Learn German Let’s Play as much as I enjoyed making it. The game remains every bit as enjoyable as when it first came out, and I found this playthrough of Pokemon Fire Red in German one of my most fun ever.
