Why did EA cancel a Harry Potter MMO in the early 2000s?

In an interview with The Real Brandolorian, Kim Salzer - EA Director of Product Marketing from 2000 to 2003 - said they once worked on an MMO for Harry Potter and even had a beta ready.

While Hogwarts Legacy is still on track at Avalanche Software and being developed as an action-rpg, it does make one wonder if a Harry Potter MMO could still be a possibility one day.
