"Eastward is an ARPG developed by Pixpil, an indie studio based in Shanghai. It was published by Chucklefish, the same company as Stardew Valley, which is how I found it. Oh, how glad I am that I found it. I’ve played my fair share of indie pixel-art RPGs, but Eastward is something completely unique.

The amount of detail that went into all of the movements of the characters is astonishing. You can literally see them breathing. The little dances when you beat a boss fight fit the personalities of each character. I love that the save points are fridges you keep your memories in. Steven pointed out that the game has a lot of things that point to methods of preservation, like the currency being salt, but I haven’t figured out the significance yet. The scenery set the mood so well that I felt like I was there. I am also a sucker for 8-bit video game music, so this hit the spot. I didn’t even feel bad when I died because the gameover track is so powerful. I don’t have the words for it, but it causes a physical sensation, where I feel something building up inside my chest, pushing me to keep going."
