El Camino is a movie directed by Vince Gilligan starring Aaron Paul. It’s a continuation of the massively popular TV show Breaking Bad, focussing entirely on the moments following Jesse Pinkman's escape from his captors. The series finale aired in 2013, so the actors portraying the characters we revisit have noticeably changed even though the timeline doesn’t skip a beat. This can be distracting, but if you allow yourself to get beyond that the performances bring you back. We have plenty of cameos in the form of flashbacks of old and also some new previously unseen interactions. So we definitely get to spend a bit of time with some old favorites, but in order to keep true to the story there are justifiable omissions.
I found myself enjoying the movie for many reasons, but none more important than getting closure on multiple levels. The pacing feels right, the decisions and character choices were logical and true to their nature, and there’s no feeling of loose ends. Sure there are so many places we can go and character arcs to follow in the Breaking Bad universe, but this is specifically Jesse’s story. Making a movie six years after the finale of what might be the most critically acclaimed TV show of all time is a difficult task in itself. Doing so with essentially the supporting actor as the lead just shows how much faith Vince has in Aaron. It’s just an impossible feat to satisfy the overwhelmingly positive memories of our favorites. This is probably the most needless risk taken by a director I can currently think of, and why we hardly ever revisit some of the greatest movies and shows ever done. The show has seasons to flush out amazing stories while we just have moments to tell them here. That being said, it’s a great watch and a rare instance that the risk of making this movie didn’t damage the legacy of the show.
I rate this movie a 7.5 / 10
