We picked up a used SAE competition BAJA off of kijiji. It came with most of the parts we needed but was missing some essential items such as a steering column, engine, seat, safety gear, brake lines, gas pedal, some hardware, and a few other miscellaneous items. In this video, we took it from as is condition to the first test drive which included the following steps:
-Stripping it down and painting it matt black,
-Reassembled everything and aligned the steering and suspension,
-Making a steering column and adding a steering wheel,
-Welding together a motor mount and bolting it on,
-Mounting our electric motor from http://accelerated-systems.com/. It is a 15 hp electric DC brushless motor with 54 ft-lbs of torque. The electronic speed controller (ESC) is amazing! It can provide 100 volts at 600 amps and every parameter imaginable is programmable through Bluetooth right from your phone.
-Mounted the chains and tensioned them,
-Added a large contactor salvaged from an electric fork lift to use as the main power cut off,
-Mounted an accelerator pedal and wired it to the ESC. The ESC was then calibrated to the new accelerator,
-Mounted the brake pedal, ran the brake lines, and bled them,
-Mounted the batteries and connected them to the ESC, We used 8 ZIPPY Compact 6200mAh 6s 40c Lipo Packs from Hobby King. Check them out here ► https://goo.gl/9QNdIc
-Added some safety webbing,
-Took it for a test drive.
It was a lot of fun but we are going to need some safety gear before we can properly test it. It turns really well which means it will flip easily; I got it up on 2 wheels. Stay tuned for the next episode.
