We’ve certainly seen a lot in the news lately about the challenges that can arise when areas are hit with emergency situations and natural disasters. September is Disaster Preparedness Month, and the Camden Public Library is partnering with the Midcoast Medical Reserve Corp (MMRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to present a workshop that will introduce concepts from the Ready.gov OPEN program. The program is designed to teach participants how to identify risks, locate resources, and take preparedness actions. Individuals, community-based nonprofits, community service groups, and businesses will all benefit from the strategies that will be discussed in this introduction to general principles for preparedness.
Representatives from FEMA will be focusing on three fundamental areas in this workshop: understanding risks; mitigating risks; and establishing a communications plan. The presentation will be conducted by Arlene Magoon, FEMA Region I Individual and Community Preparedness Officer and Jed Fiato, a Regional Preparedness Liaison supporting the Individual and Community Preparedness Division in FEMA Region 1.
OPEN (Organizations Preparing for Emergency Needs) was originally designed to empower Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to better prepare for incidents. When CBOs are unable to sustain operations during an incident, individuals who rely on them are exponentially impacted. Foundational concepts that will be discussed in this workshop can broadly be applied to empower everyone to be more prepared and resilient for a disaster or emergency.
