Using a hardware switch to disable the front panel controls on an APC SMT2200I in favour of enabling the traditional Smart protocol/UPS-Link protocol to be accessed from the RJ50 COM port on the rear of the unit.

On this unit, running firmware 7.1, this enables the UPS to be run like a third-generation Smart-UPS, and enables compatibility with software like apcupsd. It also allows for EEPROM programming, so parameters like battery charge voltage can be adjusted.
