ENCANTO | Antonio Shot Progression | Animation Breakdowns | 3D Animation Internships
55It’s been a minute since I’ve posted! I’ve been very busy on Disney’s unannounced 2023 project as of late. Here are the first shots I worked on in Encanto! Thank you very much to Phil To, the sequence sup, for giving me this wonderful moment to animate! I was especially excited to animate the toucan, supervised by Valentin Amador Diaz.
There are four versions here.
-- First is the final animation as it appears in the film
-- Second is my first pass
-- Third is my second pass attempting to address the notes.
Notes were to have Mirabel do a larger breath on the first shot, have Antonio looking up at the door before the toucan comes in, have Mirabel with a less puckered mouth and less asymmetry in her brows, have the toucan be more in Antonio’s face when he first chirps at him, add time to Antonio’s realization that he can understand animals, make the toucan goofier and make sure it’s clear Antonio is processing what the toucan is saying, and finally add time to Mirabel’s reaction, making her brighter at the beginning and then confused.
-- Fourth is my final polished animation with even more notes addressed! Antonio has a bigger reaction when the toucan lands on his arm, I pushed the pose of the toucan leaning into Antonio, I also made sure the toucan was leaning in on the following shot. Some toucan vocalizations were added here as well. We also added the toucan making a big dumb sound as he lands on Antonio to make their conversation clearer.
Also the directors liked how silly the toucan looked staring straight ahead so I stayed longer in that pose. And finally I made Mirabel a little less bright at the beginning of the last shot. The second shot of the crowd is black and white and not animated by me.
