Cryptography refers to the construction and analysis of protocols that prevent third parties from reading private messages. Julius Caesar, Roman emperor, used a code to protect messages sent to his generals. Thus, if the message fell into enemy hands, the information could not be understood. In this code, each letter of the alphabet was replaced by the letter three positions ahead, that is, “A” was replaced by “D”, “B” by “E”, “C” by “F”, and so on.
Any code that has a letter substitution pattern like the one described is considered a Caesar Cipher or Caesar Code. Note that, to decipher a Caesar Cipher, it is enough to find out which letter the “A” was replaced by, as this defines all the other substitutions to be made.
A message, in a 26-letter alphabet, was encoded using a Caesar Cipher. Consider the probability of randomly discovering the pattern used in this coding, and that a failed attempt should be eliminated in subsequent attempts.
