Energy Protests in Schwerin, Germany
480Thousands of people rallied in Schwerin on Monday evening against the German government’s policies on Russia, including sanctions and sending arms to Kiev, which demonstrators claimed was fuelling the energy crisis and sky-high inflation. According to police, around 4.500 demonstrators took to the streets of the capital of Germany's northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Starting at the local castle, they carried placards, banners and national flags, despite the bad weather. "Some of the pensioners now pay two and a half times the price for gas, electricity - I still don't know," said one participant, Bernard Gaykt. "What is this nonsense? Sanctions have never brought anything. 70 years of sanctions against North Korea - and what?" "The whole relationship with Russia is totally screwed up," he continued. "If NATO or the EU had renounced Ukraine and said: 'OK, this will be a new neutral state. We'll take away all the army units around Russia, we'll take away the missile stationing around Russia,' then everything would have been fine." Germany is facing a gas crisis, with the Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Russia shut down. Berlin accused Moscow of 'blackmail', while Gazprom cited essential maintenance and the Kremlin blamed Western sanctions for hampering repairs. The pipe’s successor, Nord Stream 2, was closed unilaterally by Germany in February, at the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Many of the demonstrators demanded the government restart the work. "We want gas from Russia, cheaper gas," said one, while others carried signs with slogans such as 'Nord Stream 2 - turn on the tap'. Similar rallies also took place on Monday in other parts of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, such as Neustrelitz, Wismar, Güstrow, Neubrandenburg, Parchim, Ludwigslust and Rostock. Source - Ruptly
