REPLAY: Russia convenes UN Security Council meeting on Nord Stream
Moscow has called an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York on Friday, September 30, to discuss damage to the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Network operator Nord Stream AG said on Tuesday that three lines of the system on the bed of the Baltic Sea had seen 'unprecedented' damage. Earlier, Sweden issued a warning about leaks in Nord Stream 1 while Denmark also discovered one in the nearby Nord Stream 2. Both the EU and Russia have alleged 'sabotage', although the Kremlin has said that the implications Russia is responsible for are 'predictable' and 'absurd'. Nord Stream 1 gas flows were suspended last month, with EU politicians accusing Russia of energy 'blackmail’, and Moscow blaming Western sanctions for hampering maintenance work. Work on the successor, Nord Stream 2, was unilaterally suspended by Germany in February, following the conflict in Ukraine. Credit: United Nations, NEWS USE ONLY
