The development of the first computer marked a significant turning point in human history. It paved the way for a revolution in computing, leading to advancements that have shaped the world we live in today. In this article, we will explore the origins of the first computer and the impact it had on the field of computing.

The first computer, known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), was developed during World War II by John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania. Completed in 1945, the ENIAC was a massive machine, occupying a room of about 1,800 square feet and consisting of thousands of vacuum tubes, switches, and cables.

The ENIAC was primarily designed to perform complex calculations used in military applications, particularly for artillery trajectory calculations. It possessed an impressive computational power, capable of performing calculations at a speed much faster than any human operator. It had the ability to execute 5,000 additions or subtractions per second and store around 20 numbers simultaneously in its memory.
