THE DWARVES, THE FANTASY INDIE GAME FOR PC/MAC OS/PS4/Xbox One
“The Dwarves” is a high fantasy tactical role-playing game featuring pauseable real time combat. In the game players must find their way through a medieval environment while battling different classic fantasy monsters. The game is based on the novel “The Dwarves” (first book of the fantasy series “The Dwarves”) by German fantasy, horror and SciFi author Markus Heitz. The music was composed by Benny Oschmann.
The video game The Dwarves was developed by King Art Games and published by THQ Nordic in 2016.
THE DWARVES: THE BACKGROUND, GAME MECHANICS AND RECEPTION
In The Dwarves players follow the story of dwarven orphan, smith and scholar Tungdil Goldhand whose adventure begins with running an errand for his master – the venerable mage Lot-Ionan. He soon finds out that his journey is taking place in the middle of a huge orc invasion, with mysterious forces behind it. He has to accomplish his quest and also find out what it is to be a dwarf – for he grew up as the only dwarf in his master's vaults.
The game seems to be sort of CRPG style but in my opinion is essentially a point-and-click adventure with simple yet action packed combat. Role-playing elements are light: a limited number of items and skills seem to aim more at casual players. The writing and voice acting is really good in this game and the strong classic fantasy story can compete with the best games available. If you like this game probably comes down to if you like fantasy themes or not.
The Dwarves was received with mixed but strongly varying results. As of 2024 Metacritic is 61% (see https://www.metacritic.com/game/the-dwarves/). As always on PlayingHardball we will see and judge for ourselves. We know that so called professional journalism cannot be relied on anyway.
THIS THE DWARVES LET'S PLAY
In this Lets Play we will see a full The Dwarves playthrough. We will see the full The Dwarves game and we will explore as much of the game as possible. Thus and as usual we will follow a completionist approach.
As with all my Let's Plays this series also functions as a tutorial and walkthrough. We will see lots of uncut commented gameplay and play the full The Dwarves campaign.
In the end of this series of game videos I will add a video with my collected thoughts which will function as a test and review for The Dwarves. Then I will also provide some more tips and tricks for the game.

I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical elements (like XCOM, Panzer Corps, Total War etc), and RPGs (like Cyberpunk 2077, newer Fallout titles etc) and especially CRPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1 and 2 or Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
