Originally the iconic monsters started as Trading Cards in 1989, then grew into a massive toy line in 1990 by Matchbox, which included over 200 different monsters, creatures, and mythical beings. There was also an animated series that aired one episode in 1992, but it was planned for multiple episodes. The NES game packaging came with an exclusive figure, which could be one of four different color variations.
