Escape from Naraka caught my attention immediately due to its wonderfully looking screenshots portraying Balinese culture and particularly its interpretation of Hell. As I know nothing about it, I was naturally keen to explore and experience this new yet enchanting world, even though I play platformers rather sporadically.
Thus, I was disappointed when I found out that Escape from Naraka uses the said culture only in visual form for its environment, which is fine, of course, but I was hoping to learn a thing or two about it. The only background it provides is that you venture into Hell to find your wife, and that is all. While I understand that this subgenre mainly focuses on the gameplay, I would still like to see a bit more. At least in the form of optional collectable scrolls or diaries, which would describe the locations or monsters. If I do not even know what is supposed to be a faithful and authentic representation, then its potential seems a bit wasted for me.
Luckily, the gameplay manages to be enjoyable enough on its own. At first, I was afraid that controls would be clunky, but it surprised me how smooth the movement was and that I have not felt at any moment that my death would be the game’s fault, so kudos for that. Your goal is simple: get from the start of the level to its end as fast and efficiently as possible. Will you collect shiny gems during it? Perhaps take an optional route, leading to a secret reward? Or just go straightly to the finish line? Up to you, really.
