Esse Ran (pronounced “ess ran”) is an electronic music producer based in Montreal, Canada. His hardware-based practice gives rise to an obscure industrial techno where both rhythms and textures share a common ground, which foregrounds experimentation as a central tenet to his practice. His music is composed with a distinctive palette of synthetic percussion sounds blended with analog synth sequences and noisy layers, without ever losing sight of the groove.
On Derelict Memories, Esse Ran dives deep into the hypothetical of human extinction by imagining, pondering, and constructing the sonic landscapes of a post-human earth. The artist has described this world as a “deforested, excavated, and drilled out planet covered with concrete infrastructures, plastic islands and enormous data centers containing all the bits of its very own exploitation. From the epilog, It was all documented. Written on precious minerals, encrypted and yet intangible. Therefore, all this data is sitting still without an ear to hear nor an eye to see; encoded, dead cold. The Derelict Memories of a bygone humanity.”
The six track album builds a fluid narrative of an uncanny universe collaged together with miscellaneous and ambient sounds. Some of them oddly resemble the chirps and croaks of insects, as if one is in a nebulous wonderland filled with living organisms, reminding us that life will carry on beyond human existence.
