E.T. Atari 2600...wait, ๐๐๐ผ๐ game?! *BEATEN IT!!*
The ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ด๐ต game of all time...or is it? That's right, we have an unusual game on the channel. Normally, I mostly play between good or masterpiece titles, but this time, I'm doing the complete opposite - a ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฑ game! But is it dreadful as the media say it is for decades? The game, on the ancient Atari 2600, is called E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which is actually based on the masterpiece movie of the same name, making it a very early video game adaption of a film. Why is the E.T. game so hated? Well, this game, alongside the disastrously rushed port of Pac-Man on the same console (which to me is even worse), is widely responsible for the 1983 video game crash, the time when games in America went into a nasty recession before the NES rescued the industry a couple years later (though Atari still continued until 1992). It was so bad that thousands of unsold various games, including Pac-Man/E.T., were crushed and buried in a landfill covered with concrete. For this negative impact, this actually makes E.T. an important game like some of the great games I so far played on my channel.
As for the game itself, E.T. was VERY rushed - built in just over 5 weeks by one person (impressive, actually). It gives almost no explanation of what to do, and the gameplay is redundant and confusing, making many players get stuck. I was "unfortunate" enough to have this as one of the few Atari 2600 games I actually did played in real Heavy Sixer hardware. It did not help that the default game setting is at its hardest AND it is a randomizer. The fatal flaw to most people is they didn't carefully read the instruction manual first. By time I figured it out and did practice, the game is actually playable and I CAN beat it - something only a few in the world ever done (literally). The objective is to collect three hidden pieces of an interplanetary phone to make E.T. contact his home planet and return the alien back from Earth, while avoiding the FBI agent and scientist enemies.
Upon experiencing this game in full for the first time, personally, I feel exactly like the AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd). E.T., while the game is infamous, does have serious flaws and I don't recommend it, it isn't actually the most terrible game around, because it can be played/beaten and in truth, a lot of games much worse than E.T. exists, such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on NES, Desert Bus on Sega CD or even Superman 64 on N64, and I DARE you to play those.
