Eternal Melody is...a complex and simple game at the same time. After the introductory segment(s), you are allowed to choose three characters (out of twelve...though Lemit, Cail, and Iris reject you) to form a party with you and find magical artifacts, as planned by Roxanne. Different characters think differently not only of your hero, but of each other; in other words, different pairings aren't just interesting due to different dialogue and events, but also for varying levels of difficulty and replayability. There are certain things you won't learn about characters you may/may not like unless they are your enemy. The same applies to them if they are your friend. Just because Tina may like the hero, doesn't mean that she gets along with...say...Yang-Yun. Due to Yang-Yun's somewhat "emo" disposition, she doesn't tend to get along well with others.

Relationship levels affect several things; how they do in their daily stat building affairs, how well they do on mini-quest/jobs, and...most importantly, how well they listen in combat. A character who dislikes your hero is more likely to ignore your orders...or if you want them to heal a character they don't particularly like besides the hero, they may ignore it. The hero ALWAYS listens, which makes him the strongest. Characters like Tina are good because you can usually count on her to help you in a pinch whereas Yang-Yun may cancel using a spell to do a regular attack on a random enemy. Also, relationships will affect endings and who will confess their love.

If a character is head-over-heels for the hero, that's great and they may take you on special events which give them great stat boosts (usually). For example, Tina will take you to a restaurant for spaghetti. However, the hero does have his own relationship level...be mindful of this as it also affects the ending. Tina can love you, but you may not necessarily love her as much as she does you. You could love Karen more.

You can do a couple of things to change relationship levels. The basic method is dating, where you spend money and go places. If the girl really likes the place, it will boost their feelings...of course, in the case of Tina, she seems to like nearly everything you do. If she is smiling or blushing afterwards, you did good. If they don't like it...you keep taking them to different date spots. You get to discover what they like this way.

The second method is story related. As you progress through the game, you will get a "questionaire" of sorts with a girl in your party, depending on the pairing you have. You can tell if you do good or bad in these events because of the "YOU WIN" music that plays or the "DUN DUN DUN" cheesy "try again" type music...trust me, it's easy to know which is which. You get to learn a good deal from these story events, both if you do well and if you fail, further boosting replay value.

Why would you need to know these things? Characters have many "?" in their profiles (including Cail, Lemit, and Iris) and they disappear as you learn things about them...this includes the "coveted" 3-sizes of characters. Those who know about sims know what I'm talking about. The game has a "DATABASE" option that can show you this as well as act as a sort of sound test, though it doesn't have all the themes...unless you unlock more stuff I guess.

The game is pretty cool, but the board game portion where you move and fight can be somewhat annoying and rigged. Lemit's team is way-overpowered, usually crushing Cail's team and causing you to waste ALL of your resources just to keep her at bay. Their magic attacks are usually complete pwnage too. I also don't like how event squares on the map do nothing to the CPU, but often times make you waste a turn...that wasn't necessary. The PS and SAT games have different opening and ending themes as they were done by different people. The music is pretty nice.

Enjoy.
