So, this is the basic introduction (based on my own personal experience) of how to start and work on the trader role. I'd also like to add a small timeline:

Beginner:
You need to go to a post office, or your camp lock-box, to get the letter from Cripps.
Then, go to a general store, and buy the license (or butcher's table.
Then, hunt animals with your horse, stowing one and dragging another with a lasso.
Rinse and repeat, until you own the medium wagon, at lvl 5.
Daily trader missions are also worth to take a look at.

Intermediate:
As you own the medium wagon, you'll just have to do the same you did above, but the pay will be better. It is here, where you should start upgrading your wilderness outfitters. Don't forget to keep sending animals for Cripps to turn into materials.
As soon as you reach level 10, you'll unlock the hunting wagon, and if you bought the medium wagon, you'll be able to buy the Large delivery wagon.

Advanced:
Now that you've bought the large wagon, you'll be making serious money.
You can also steal a horse, and stow another dead animal, making it 3 animals.
You can also, stow 5 animals in your hunting wagon, then one on your horse, then one on a stolen horse, making it 7 in total. Then, donate the animals on the horse / horses, then flee them, call your hunting wagon, and donate them to cripps. rinse and repeat, until the bar is full. You need to fill the top bar 4 times, to have one full materials bar.
