The optimism generated by Jesse's mission is short lived. After returning to Calico, he learns his father has taken a turn for the worse. He's been bitten by a vampire and it's only a matter of time before he turns into one. Edgar, however, isn't ready to give up on his old friend. Even if that means breaking the Institute's own code. He leaves in search of medicine that might suppress William's infection and urges Jesse to follow Felicity's trails. it's clear now that her destruction of the Rentier's Institute is part of a much bigger plan. Jesse briefs the team on what he found on the Devil's Pass , Outlaws transformed into monsters. He saved a lost Calico Agent named Scott Bloom who told him that his transformation is linked to strange blood transported in giant leeches brought from a place called McCallum's Sawmill. Apparently, the whole place is glamoured and without a working Zapper, the illusion remains impenetrable. Luckily, the Institute's engineer in Calico, Vergil Olney, may know how to repair William's Zapper. Together he and Jesse travel to the Institute's remote outpost in Baxter. There they hope to find special coils needed to repair his father's invention. However, no one has been to Baxter since it was overrun by vampires, so no one knows what dangers await.
Jesse finds Baxter cell in a re-appropriated mining shafts, where the miners of Baxter town had found one of an ancient beast and recovers the coils necessary to repair his gauntlet from William's invention. The whole place has been glamoured by the vampires, making it a perfect spot to test out William's glamour breaker. Vergil theorizes the vampires had bled the creature dry and used its blood in their schemes.
