I absolutely L.O.V.E.D. Evoland 2. It improves on the original in almost every way imaginable.
For one, the entire game is not based on perspective puzzles anymore. Instead, you have a whole slew of game styles (in addition to changing eras) that keep the game fresh constantly. The core is still an action-RPG, but now you have shmup sections, platforming sections, beat 'em up sections, puzzle game sections, tactical-RPG sections, turn-based battle sections, rhythm game sections, and more! It's crazy!
Even better, the game's time travel feature (past: 8-bit, present: 16-bit, future: 32-bit) is extremely well-done and really contributes to the storyline. You don't switch styles every two seconds like you did in the first game, but you play significant lengths of time in just one era so the game can build an entire world for you to explore. In fact, there's only one section of the game that reproduces the first game's gimmick, thank goodness (timeline puzzles in that danged forest). My only minor complaint here is that the character portraits never change in style.
Otherwise, the game features yet another addictive card game, but as opposed to the one found in the first Evoland, that one is more similar in style to other games you may have played before, i.e. Heathstone or, in board game form, Summoner Wars. Finding all the cards represents a nice little challenge.
It's easy to finish the game without getting all upgrades, the mine cart section is a real pain, and there are quite a few grammar/spelling mistakes in the script, but overall the game is a great experience. Things never got stale and it never ceased to surprise me. Yet again, video game and pop culture references abound. The pixel art is beautiful. The music is good. Sure, the game was perhaps a little too easy, but I loved it nonetheless. Highly recommended, and I hope they make a third one one day!
