Coincidentally Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev became president of the breakaway Chechen state In April 1996, following the assassination of his predecessor. He then lost the election and had a falling out with the winner and was subsequently tied to Islamic extremist movements in the region during and after the second Chechen war. His 13 year old son was reported as being severely injured along with two other occupants who may have succumbed from their wounds.

Yandarbiyev headed a Chechen delegation that met President of Russia Boris Yeltsin and Prime Minister of Russia Viktor Chernomyrdin for peace talks at the Kremlin that resulted in the signature of a ceasefire agreement on 27 May 1996. During a later meeting he famously insisted that Yeltsin switch seats so that Yandarbiyev “would be received like a head of sovereign state.”
