🧿 Exile (TurboGrafx-CD) – Cult Classic Action-RPG With a Dark, Philosophical Edge 🏹 🌍
Today we’re exploring one of the most unique and underappreciated action-RPGs of the early '90s — Exile, released for the TurboGrafx-CD in 1991. Developed by Telenet Japan and published by Working Designs, Exile blends real-world religious and political themes with side-scrolling action, overhead exploration, and a hauntingly atmospheric CD soundtrack.
You play as Sadler, a battle-hardened Syrian assassin turned spiritual seeker, on a journey across a war-torn medieval world. From Persia to India to China, Exile challenges you with philosophical questions, intense real-time combat, and mysterious magic — all wrapped in anime cutscenes and English voice acting that were groundbreaking for the time.
🗡 ️ Why Exile stands out:
A bold mix of overhead RPG towns and fast-paced 2D action combat
Mature, thought-provoking story with political and religious undertones
Gorgeous redbook audio soundtrack that sets an eerie, immersive mood
Early use of voice acting and animated cutscenes
A cult favorite that dared to be different in an era of formulaic RPGs
While the gameplay can be a bit clunky at times, and the localization is pure Working Designs — full of charm and quirks — Exile remains a fascinating experience that’s unlike anything else on the TurboGrafx-CD. It’s a dark, ambitious RPG that deserves recognition for how far ahead of its time it really was.
