Exit, Pursued by a Boar (Assassin's Creed Odyssey after 100 Hours on Nightmare difficulty)
0It's been clear to me for quite some time that I'm unlikely to finish Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018) before the heat death of the universe, and that's OK.
I chose Nightmare difficulty from the start - thinking that some added tension to the gameplay could be a way to overcome that open world fatigue which was already weighing heavy on me six long years ago - and this has obviously slowed down my progess considerably ever since. For one thing, clearing out the larger enemy installations in the game becomes a very time-consuming process when a single misstep can lead to inevitable death.
Another reason for my inability to finish the game is that the main storyline never really grabbed me particularly (even though the overall thirstiness of many of the characters is quite amusing), so I've mostly been doing a lot of repetitive side content while toying hubristically with the idea of a 100% complete playthrough of this sprawling sandbox adventure.
As things stand, ACO is a game I return to maybe once or twice a year and usually have quite a bit of fun with (in a mindless, "comfort food" kind of way); even if all I actually accomplish during my intermittent sessions is to clear out a few more bandit camps on the map. Killing the Legendary animals on Nightmare difficulty is a rather infuriating set of challenges, though, and the Erymanthian Boar featured in this video has killed me over and over again for several (real life) years before I was finally able to kill the damn beast today.
