Friends, it is very challenging to discover any other exoplanet in this infinite universe of ours because any planets are many times smaller and dimmer than the stars orbiting them. For example, you can see our Earth which is very small in comparison to its parent star i.e. our Sun. And about 1.3 million Earths can fit inside our Sun. Any exoplanet present in the universe does not have any light of its own and for all these reasons rarely any planet can be directly detected. Although so far scientists have seen some extrasolar planets directly, but all these extrasolar planets seen are much bigger than Jupiter in our solar system.
The Kepler space telescope sent by scientists uses the transit method to detect exoplanets present in the universe. And it has proved to be the most successful method so far.
Launched by NASA in 2009 and completing its mission by 2018, the Kepler space telescope played a significant role in the discovery of exoplanets using the transit method. And the Kepler space telescope alone observed more than 5 million stars in the Cygnus constellation, and during this time it detected more than 2,600 exoplanets. And finding such a large number of exoplanets showed us that there is a much greater diversity of planets in this infinite universe than there are planets in our solar system. And compared to the types of planets present in our solar system, these exoplanets are quite different and of different species, although the properties of many of these planets also match the properties of the planets of the Solar System.
The Transit Method –
The transit method is the oldest method for finding exoplanets. Actually, according to this method, when a planet is orbiting its star, during that time it passes in front of it. And whenever this happens, there is a decrease in the light coming from that star, due to which scientists understand that some planet may be orbiting this star. During a transit (a change in the light coming from the star), there is a very slight decrease in the light coming from the star. To find out which scientists have to face a lot of difficulties. And you have to keep your strong eye on that star through telescope.
