An independent, small team of developers set out to deliver a game the likes of which has rarely been seen in recent times. Turn-based, while still offering photorealistic graphics at the cutting edge, good enough to compete with AAA titles that have many times the budget. Once upon a time, a game could be a turn based RPG while also being at the technological forefront of visuals and cinematics. In recent years however that genre has been largely dormant - but with this game, it's made a hell of a comeback.
Having first come across it in a trailer some months ago, I was interested in the premise, the quality of the visuals, the art direction and of course the turn-based combat. I wanted to try it, anticipating it would be a solid effort from a new team, but ultimately unlikely to be much better than just a "good game". When the game launched and I saw the critic reviews however, I was already quite surprised. It sits on a 92 Metascore, putting it in "masterpiece" category based purely on critical response. As with any critic aggregated score however, I took that with a grain of salt. What really tells me if a game is special is what the actual fans and players think of the experience. I then saw the user scores coming in. As of now, from over 11,000 users it holds a 9.7/10 - an almost impossibly good score, eclipsing the likes of Witcher 3, Persona 5 Royal and every Final Fantasy game ever made. There are reasons why it's this high I'm sure, an almost "positive review bombing" if you will, but I don't think that's enough to dismiss the incredible reception the game has had.
I still continue to take my pinch of salt, I'm not coming in assuming this is literally the best game ever made, but I think it's impossible to deny at this stage that E33 is special for many, and has captured the hearts and imaginations of countless people around the world. Sales have been incredibly strong too at over 2 million for a debut, independent release within the first couple of weeks. A truly astounding launch for this game, far beyond my expectations.
But none of this guarantees that I will feel the same way as the majority. Does this game truly have what it takes to be one of the best we've seen in recent times? It's impossible to ignore the hype, but I'll be keeping an open mind and just taking the game as it comes on my first ever blind playthrough. I am looking forward to finding out if the hype truly is real, and if it'll be an experience up there among my all-time favourites. Let's find out together!
