Exploring the Moon NASA's Surveyor 4 Mission
Surveyor 4 was a spacecraft of the Surveyor program launched by NASA on July 14, 1967. The spacecraft was intended to perform a soft landing on the Moon and conduct various scientific measurements and experiments. However, the spacecraft experienced a failure during its descent and crashed into the lunar surface.
Surveyor 4 was the fourth spacecraft of the Surveyor program to be launched, and it followed the successful landings of Surveyor 1, Surveyor 2, and Surveyor 3. The spacecraft was launched aboard an Atlas-Centaur rocket from Space Launch Complex 36A at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
The spacecraft successfully entered lunar orbit and began its descent to the surface on July 17, 1967. However, at an altitude of about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) above the surface, contact was lost with the spacecraft. Despite efforts to reestablish communication, the spacecraft was never heard from again, and it is believed to have crashed into the lunar surface.
Despite the failure of Surveyor 4, the Surveyor program was considered a success overall. The program's spacecraft demonstrated the feasibility of soft landings on the Moon and provided valuable data and images of the lunar surface that helped pave the way for the later Apollo program.
