Exploring the Moon NASA's Lunar Orbiter 1 Mission
Lunar Orbiter 1 was the first spacecraft in the United States' Lunar Orbiter program, designed primarily to photograph smooth areas of the lunar surface for selection and verification of safe landing sites for the Surveyor and Apollo missions. The spacecraft was launched on August 10, 1966, and entered an initial elliptical orbit around the Moon on August 14, 1966.
The spacecraft took the first photo of Earth from the vicinity of the Moon, on August 23, 1966. Over the course of its mission, Lunar Orbiter 1 took 42 high-resolution and 187 medium-resolution frames of the lunar surface. The images returned by the spacecraft helped in selecting the landing sites for the Apollo missions and provided valuable information about the lunar surface.
Lunar Orbiter 1 operated for about 80 days, until October 29, 1966, when it was commanded to crash into the lunar surface, as there was not enough propellant left to maintain its orbit.
