What is Eye of the Beholder?

The City of Waterdeep is a beautiful city, so much so that it has earned the prestigious title of City of Splendors. Unfortunately, it's often said that the most beautiful cities often have the seediest underbellies. Well, act surprised, but Waterdeep is no different. An ancient evil has begun to stir beneath the city and so the Lords of Waterdeep have hired four adventurers to explore underneath Waterdeep, starting with the city's sewers. No sooner does the party enter than the evil seals them within by a landslide of rocks. Left with little choice, the adventurers only way out...is down.

Eye of the Beholder takes some serious inspiration from Dungeon Master in terms of gameplay, but with a few alterations. First of all, rather than using a custom system for stats, Eye of the Beholder uses the 2nd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Ruleset, or Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, for pretty much everything, from your characters' creation, to their stat values and stat mins and maxes, even what they can equip and whether or not they can cast spells. They do take a few exceptions to rules, such as Mages can cast their arcane spells if they wear armor, provided they're a multi-class that has access to armor, which is something that I really like about Eye of the Beholder.

The game's graphics are fantastic, even on the Amiga, although the version I'm using is a custom fanmade version that has automap implemented and uses the DOS version's graphics.

Apart from the start and end cutscenes, there is absolutely zero music in the game, so you'll have to provide your own music if you want tunes to jam out to while you slay monsters as you go through one of my favorite Dungeon Crawler RPGs.

Honestly, Eye of the Beholder is a blast to play. It isn't perfect, by any means, but then, what game is? If you would like to have a look at what I believe is the first Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Crawler RPG (well, if you don't count games like Wizardry or Might and Magic, but those are Turn-based) that actually attempts to follow Dungeons and Dragons Rules, and you can buy this game from both Steam and gog.com, and it comes with Eye of the Beholder 2 as well as Eye of the Beholder 3, but I must give a slight edge to the Steam version, as the All-Seeing Eye is included with that version, and it's optional, too!

Before much longer, I'll have to start playing Wizardry games for my channel, and I'm excited for it, but also filled with dread. Speaking of, what are some of YOUR favorite Dungeon Crawler RPGs? Please tell me in the comments below!
