This analysis explores how Eyes Wide Shut uses mirrors, televisions, books, and films-within-the-film to comment on themes of fidelity, duality, and the unconscious. When Bill lies to Alice while standing beside a mirror, she sits by a television playing Blume in Love, a film about infidelity by Kubrick collaborator Paul Mazursky, which itself alludes to Lolita and Death in Venice. Reflections, shadows, and repeated motifs—such as Shadows on the Mirror, Isaak’s Shadows in a Mirror, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem My Shadow—deepen the film’s metatextual resonance. These symbols connect to Jung’s theory of the “shadow” and to Kubrick’s ongoing exploration of the duality of man, from Full Metal Jacket to Eyes Wide Shut.
