One observation one can make is how much GP Legend tries to make the player win. True, starting positions are influenced from Maximum Velocity. However, in GP Legend, of all the cues it took from X and GX, it didn't take starting positions into account. As a result, in normal play, tracks are nothing more than solo exercise sessions (assuming you choose the optimal machines).

Deliberately starting in positions to reflect your previous races like in the 3D games can really bring out a little more challenge.
