Here's a walk-though of a little design for bot-based smelting of ore to steel. I found a trick that I'm sure others have discovered using buffer chests both to request the ore and to send away the steel.

Oh and sorry for my terrible maths! It's obviously 4 iron plate smelters to feed 5 steel plate smelters. 4x1.2 = 5.
