Fallout berlatar tempat di California tahun 2161 yang sudah menjadi "wasteland" setelah perang besar. Kita berperan sebagai penghuni dari Vault 13, yang dijuluki sebagai "Vault Dweller". Di suatu hari, water chip di Vault 13 rusak, lalu Overseer dari Vault 13 menugaskan kita, Vault Dweller, untuk mencari pengganti water chip tersebut. Lalu dimulailah petualangan si Vault Dweller.
