The third installment saw the most drastic change in the franchise. Bethesda Software took over after Interplay after their cancelled "Van Buren" project. The gameplay changed to a first-person shooter/RPG rather than isometric top-down view, adding to the immersion of the environment.

In this game you play as "The Lone Wanderer" who flees Vault 101 where he was raised. He ventures into the wasteland in search of his father who mysteriously left without telling anyone where he was going.
