A foolproof way of keeping settlers intact and alive without loosing any turrets or other defenses when you attack it is to 1) make sure you have ZERO supply lines set up for the settlement, 2) store all of your turrets and food in the Workshop, 3) build as many artillery mortars as you can, and 4) send all settlers to other settlements that *do* have supply lines. You need to do this for at least 8 settlements, and that's not to mention the ones you strong-arm into providing for your gangs.

This is Part 217 of a blind playthrough of Fallout 4. There will occasionally be long awkward pauses in the middle of gameplay, so just a heads up. I'm not sure how long these videos should be, so they will range from around 30 minutes to an hour at most (around 20 minutes if I didn't have time to record more). Feedback would be appreciated.
