The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, or V.A.T.S., is a queuing system for Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, inspired partly by the ability to shoot specific parts in the turn-based combat system of Fallout and Fallout 2. It is also used for a cinematic combat experience.
In Fallout 4, V.A.T.S., while largely similar, went through some changes. Unlike previous games, it slows the time rather than pausing the game. Critical hits are no longer randomized, with players able to choose which of their shots will be critical. However, the option requires a recharge afterwards as it drains a bar assigned for the feature.
