To get Cass as a companion, you need to start the quest You Can Depend on Me through Alice McLafferty at the Crimson Caravan Company near the New Vegas Medical Clinic.

Progress through You Can Depend on Me until Alice gives you three tasks, one of them being getting Cassidy Caravans to sell out.

Go to Cass in the bar at Mojave Outpost and ask her if she would surrender her brand name.
50 barter makes her part with it for 750 caps from you,
75 barter allows you to enter a drinking contest with her leading to her agreeing to sigh,
50 speech makes her agree to leave if you kill Ranger Jackson or finish the quest Can You Find It in Your Heart?,
75 speech makes her sign right then and there.

Recruit her as a companion immediately afterward and strike up a conversation. If your karma is not negative, she confides that she wants to visit her employees' death site.

When you approach the attack site, Cass questions the use of energy weapons and the time of day her crew was overwhelmed.

Investigate the pack brahmin for her to ask if you mind taking her to another caravan attack site where the killers had a similiar M.O.

At the second, she once again is disturbed by the ambush style and the use of energy weapons. Once again investigate the wreckage until she says she's found a map showing another attack location.

At this third spot, again just look around until Cass puts everything together and blames Gloria Van Graff and Alice McLafferty for all the murders.

You can agree to help her murder the targets (keep in mind killing Alice may lead to NCR infamy) or ask if she would allow you to find evidence to make long-term damage against the two ladies' respective organizations.

The violent end of the quest creates political and economic troubles for the NCR by the Crimson Caravan refusing to cut deals until justice is brought to the murder of Alice.

The peaceful end gains the NCR leverage again Crimson Caravan officials allowing the Republic to economically flourish after he Hoover Dam conflict is complete.

The violent end of the quest gains Cass the Hand of Vengeance perk which gives her +15% gun damage bonus.

The peaceful end gets the Calm Heart perk that increases her health by 50 hp.

The violent solution is easy enough, stealth kill the targets.

The peaceful solution is slightly trickier. You'll need 75 science or lockpick.
The Crimson Caravan evidence is in the main office in an average lock safe. The key can be pickpocketed from Alice who is either there or sleeping in the guards barracks.
The Van Graff evidence is in the Silver Rush through a hard locked door. Steal the key from one of the guards and then pick the safe lock or hack the terminal.

With both pieces, go to Cass who will tell you to speak with Ranger Jackson at Mojave Outpost.
Speaking with Jackson finishes the quest.
