The unmarked quest is started through Torres. She needs help tracking a missing laser pistol.

After you agree to help, speak with the paladin in charge of the gun range. He'll direct you to initiate Stanton.

In the dead of night, Stanton is sleeping in the eastern barrack.
In the morning, he's in the classroom near the east barracks.
In the afternoon, in the virtual reality pod room.
And in the evening, patrolling the bunker.

He'll tell you the pistol is at Scorpion Gulch.

Move south-east out of Hidden Valley through a hole in the fencing and follow the path until you reach a small valley. In the valley, near a dead wastelander, you'll find the pistol resting on a rock.

Loot the wastelander's body too since he spawns with a star cap in his inventory.

While you're at the gulch, might as well head north to claim the mission holotape from a dead brotherhood patrol in a radioactive crater.
