Fallout Tactics - Mission 9 [St. Louis]
I find it easier to go north from the start of this mission. The mutants east from the insertion point use a more fortified position.
Next, I wasn't authorised to assault the enemy base but I did it anyway.
The main entryway to the mutant base (the southern one) should be avoided as its riddled with near-undetectable mines and is guarded by big bois with Browning M2 heavy machine guns using depleted uranium ammo (killing one of them yields almost 2,000 xp, almost as much as completing one of the mission objectives, so it's worth assaulting the base just for that), and even a glancing hit from that does large amounts of damage. They themselves, similarly to other armoured mutants, shrug off most of your attacks - targeted shots are recommended here (if you cripple the arm of one of guards arms then he won't be able to use his gun and it's possible that he'll run at you - through the minefield; same happens if they run out of ammo).
At any rate, take extreme caution and keep your distance at all times.
I find that the best approach is to take out as many enemies as possible without getting too close. A good sniper helps, and Dillon has the Perception stat of *14* which allows him to pick off targets nearly at the maximum range of the sniper rifle. Don't keep him too close to the rest of the squad, though, or they'll become radiated.
Once you decide to enter, cross the bridge and head east along the moat and around the corner until you almost hit the northern edge of the map; there, the base can be accessed via a non-obviously apparent slope.
There are two sniper rifles to be picked up in this location: from a trapped chest inside a bunker and on a super mutant on one of the plateaus (listed below, and in the video, as a chapter). Very important.
Deathclaws on squad become somewhat less useful at this point but they can still use grenades.
