Fallout's Random Roach King | Fallout Lore
Fallout has no shortage of strange characters; the AntAgonizer, the Mechanist, Harold…each with their own quirks and goals and The Roach King is no exception.
First appearing in Fallout 3, The Roach King is a mysterious figure who, according to his name, has somehow tamed radroaches and declared himself their monarch. Ever vigilant, he patrols his tiny kingdom just northeast of Minefield, armed with a minigun, ready to attack anyone who approaches. At the heart of his domain sits his throne, a crude construction of tires, a padded dining chair, a clock, and a rocket playset. A throne truly fit for a king. According to The Fallout 3 Official Game Guide, his radroach subjects actually helped him build it, providing him with a place to escape the harsh Wasteland sun. How the roaches understood his desires remains a mystery, but a passage from the Wasteland Census, written from his perspective no less, offers a glimpse into his odd worldview:
"Kheee! First, build throne. Then take rocket. Kheee! Some of my shiny friends help me. What time is it? Scuttle-and-bustle time. Kheee! The sun is hot. But the throne is cool. Khee-akaahhh-kuhhh... oh, me insides don’t feel right. Sleepy time. Kheee!"
This fragmented speech suggests the Roach King has more than a few screws loose, but it may also hint at an underlying illness. His complaints about his insides hurting could indicate radiation sickness, and his fixation on staying cool might stem from his body overheating, another common result of extended radiation exposure and his throne is close to several pools of irradiated water, so it’s probably that or perhaps he’s simply sick from living with radroaches. Despite his unique title, the Roach King isn’t tied to any larger lore. His character model is randomly generated, meaning he can sometimes spawn with a woman’s body, though he always retains the same facial hair and is always wearing the same psycho tic helmet, either due to the clothing resembling an insects antenna or the goggles provide some defence from the blinding sun.
But why include him at all?
