acording to the story on the SSRG forum. robotnik has aquired all the chaos emeralds, he used there power to transform South Island to his desires by changing the landscapes to have more bottemless pits, spikes and badniks. it is Sonic's job to retrieve the emeralds and change South Island back to how it was.
