Fans are expressing dissatisfaction regarding a change in the [Resident Evil 4 remake]
Memories are a powerful force that can transport us to different times and places, evoking emotions and sensations that may have faded away. Some people recall the last sunset of a beach holiday or the aroma of their grandmother's cooking. For others, it's the voice of a particular video game character, such as the gravelly drawl of Resident Evil 4's merchant asking, "Whaddya buyin?"
Resident Evil 4 is a survival horror game that departed from the franchise's traditional zombies and introduced the Ganados - parasitically controlled religious zealots who will stop at nothing to either infect or vivisect you. As a parasitology student, I found the game appealing on many levels, but it was the merchant who won me over.
The merchant was a mysterious figure who seemed impervious to the mind-controlling parasites and always appeared when you needed him. He greeted you with a gravelly chuckle and what you could only assume to be a grin under his signature purple scarf. Meeting him felt like stepping out of the storm. Despite the hostile environment, his presence brought a unique warmth to the game.
His comments on the lethality of the weapons, knowing who you were going to point them at, were just another indication of how he was on your side. This well-stocked ally also acted as the eye of the hurricane; because enemies avoided him, you knew you were genuinely, albeit briefly, safe.
For me, the sound of the merchant calling out to me, asking "Whadd'ya buyin'?" and triumphantly telling me he'd buy my treasures at a high price created a neural connection. That voice meant not only safety but also a material advantage against the oncoming horde. It was a voice that I would always remember.
However, with the forthcoming Resident Evil 4 remake, I was disappointed to learn that Paul Mercier would not be reprising his role as the merchant. Although it made sense for Capcom to use the actor who voiced Leon in the Resident Evil 2 remake rather than Mercier, who only voiced the merchant, it still felt like a missed opportunity.
Mercier is still an active voice actor, and his return would have brought continuity with the original game while also pleasing fans worldwide. And with the easter egg referencing him in Resident Evil Village, I was convinced that he would return. Nevertheless, I understand that there may be reasons for his absence that we're unaware of, and the new actor may make their mark on the next generation of gamers' minds, just as Mercier did for me.
Ultimately, whether it's Mercier or another actor voicing the merchant in the remake, one thing is certain - when I meet the merchant again, I'll do what I've always done. I'll return the grin that I'm sure is under his signature purple scarf, and I'll ask him, in my gravelliest voice, "Whadd'ya sellin'?" Because even though the voice may be different, the memories and emotions it evokes will always be the same.
