What a fantastic game!! Running and gunning around in this FPS/RPG mix is lots of fun :-)
First you have your main storyline; a pretty cool one at that if you ask me.
But that's only a small portion of all the things you can do.
First, you need to reveal one portion of the map after the other by resetting communication towers; these broken-down steel structures must be climbed and the controll box on the top must be interacted with (this game really is a mix of Far Cry 1, Far Cry 2 and Assassins Creed).
Next you would need to liberate outposts - and unlike Far Cry 2, the STAY liberated^^ (but with the newest 1.5 patch they can be resettet!) - which you do by killing all pirates (northern island) or mercenaries (southern island).
To maximize the amount of XP you get, you should try to do this stealthily which nets you 1500XP instead of 500. This will get you points to invest in cool and usefull skills.
For this you need of course silent weapons, like the really good MP5 with added suppressor and red-dot sight (or later the signature weapon "Shredder"; one of the best guns in the game!), a suppressed sniper or if you are a real hunter (and who isn't^^): the composite bow inclusive marksman sight; *hell yeah*.
Then you would try to get to higher ground and mark all enemies with your "camera". This will give you a good picture on how to attack, the movement of the guards and it will allow you to see them even behind walls - I know, fucking cheaters :D.
There is also a craftable syringe you could use, if you are already too close or in the compound.
The easiest way is to take the enemies out with the sniper rifle. Point, shoot, repeat. If you are away far enough, they wont recognise you.
Next you could try to sneak inside the outpost through the back (where there is always a hole one can use), distract the guards by throwing rocks and silently kill them with your knife in a so called takedown move.
If you want, you could deactivate the alarm system by interacting with one of the "alarm boxes" so that no reinforcements can be called in, but if I want to go on a killing spree by storming the outpost with guns blazing, I typically want them to call for help to have more enemies to shoot at :-)
And then you have a whole lot of side missions like:
- be the best in the "Trials of the Rakyat" missions
- getting medical supplies to a place in a short amount of time
- helping various people with sometimes strange quests
- doing land/sea races
- winning shooting competitions
- playing poker
Via (this time very usefull) DLC you can get
- Lost Expeditions, where you explore ruined facilities
- Monkey Business, which lets you play around with monkeys and explosives^^
But even that isn't all, as you can buy maps, which help you find these scattered items:
- Lost Letters (of Japanese soldiers)
- Relics (from the Rakyat people)
- boxes/cashes with money and loot

So, there is ALOT one can do in Far Cry 3; and because of the outstanding graphics, it's a real pleasure to spend time on these beautiful islands.
