Far Cry 5 Multiplayer Is A Total Mess - Forge Labs
Far Cry 5 has an amazing map editor, but the multiplayer is an absolute mess.
Far Cry 5 has one of the most powerful map editors ever created, aside from of course - real dev tools. Equipped with 9000 + objects, terrain brushes, foliage brushes, time of day controls, weather, lighting, etc - the possibilities of what users can create is truly limitless. But it’s not all perfect, in fact there’s a massive hurdle that Far Cry 5 is going to need to overcome if it want’s the multiplayer community to have any sort of sustainability. As it is right now, the multiplayer system is a complete and total mess. Here’s why:
The biggest and most glaring issue is that players are not actually able to easily play their own maps. What’s the point in having an incredibly powerful editor if you can’t even play anything you make in it? I’m not joking. The process to actually play your own map, or even a map you download is incredibly difficult and uninutivie. You enter matchmaking, at which point several players in the lobby are randomly selected as “map pickers”, they have 18 seconds to chose a map. All of the selected maps are then put forth at the top of the lobby screen and everyone else in the lobby has about 25 seconds to vote for the map they want to play next. So, as someone who wants to even TEST out their map, they need to be randomly selected, then they have 18 seconds to navigate through an incredibly messy UI to find their map. THEN everyone in the lobby votes and your map doesn’t get enough votes because everyone else wants to play Nuketown for the 85th time. Sorry, try again next time.
The other big component to this, is that there is only two game modes (which are technically the same) Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch. That’s it. And what’s worse, is there are little to no custom options for those game modes. At least if there was an option to select rounds, or lives per round - you could set up somewhat new feeling game modes within the base mode, but there isn’t. You can’t really break free from the premise of Deathmatch other than spawning with sticks instead of guns or crossbows.
It’s severely threatening to the longevity of the game’s multiplayer to only have two incredibly vanilla game types. Other modes NEED to be there. Arguably the most important is infection. The core mechanic of infection is an asymmetric gamemode. When players are killed they join the other team. That in itself can bring life to a plethora of many different and unique game types that are not just “zombies”. Off the top of my head, one team is out in a field with sticks while one single player gets access to a tractor and needs to mow down all other players. Or a hide and seek game in a foggy forest - or of course, good ol’ zombies. You can make some really spooky looking maps.
Other game modes like Capture the Flag and King of the Hill also need to be here. Otherwise the game is going to get stale. Apparently we are going to be getting new game modes in the future, or at least it seems that way. Nothing has been formally confirmed, but they have said that there is going to be updates to Arcade. I sincerely hope that those are not attached to the season pass…
It’s clear that Ubisoft has invested a lot into Far Cry’s multiplayer and they want it to succeed. There are microtransactions associated with it, you can use real money to buy skins and clothing for your character. It only seems logical that they’d want people to enjoy the multiplayer and stick around for a long time because that just means more money for them. They’ve built an extremely impressive engine for players to take and run with. The problem is that there is no proper way getting to play the maps you make, and with only two game modes to play on them… it’s going to get stale fast. The thing is having a super powerful map editor doesn’t mean shit if we are always going to be doing the exact same thing on our maps.
