Fatal Frame 1: Pt 1
1Fatal Frame, released in 2001 for the PS2, is honestly one of the most tense and scary games I've ever played. The claustrophobic environments, combined with strategically placed camera views and grainy film effects, give you a sense that there's danger all around outside of your trembling flashlight beam. Slow and methodical character controls make it very difficult to respond quickly to incoming threats, and a grating, repetitive soundtrack lightly wears on your sanity as you try to piece together the puzzle of the Himuro Mansion. This game has lost absolutely nothing for being over 20 years old; in fact, the low-poly graphics and deliberate tank controls instill in the player a fear of the unknown that I feel modern games can't often match.
