The first game in the Fatal Frame series, also known as Project Zero in some regions, follows the story of a young girl named Miku Hinasaki. Miku's older brother, Mafuyu, has gone missing while investigating the ghostly happenings at the Himuro Mansion, a large estate located on the outskirts of a rural Japanese village.

Miku travels to the mansion to find her brother and quickly discovers that the mansion is haunted by malevolent spirits. As she explores the mansion, she uncovers the dark history of the Himuro family, who were responsible for performing a ritual sacrifice every decade to appease the ghosts that haunted the land.

Miku finds clues and items that help her piece together the story of the ritual and the spirits that haunt the mansion. She eventually discovers that her brother Mafuyu had also come to the mansion to investigate the ritual, but had been trapped there by the vengeful spirits.

As Miku explores the mansion, she encounters the spirits of the sacrificed victims, including a young girl named Kirie, who had been the subject of the final sacrifice ritual. Kirie had been in love with a man named Yuu, who had been chosen as the priest to perform the ritual, and had ultimately been sacrificed alongside him.

Miku discovers that the only way to defeat the spirits and free her brother is to use the Camera Obscura, an antique camera that can capture and exorcise ghosts. With the help of the camera, Miku is able to defeat the spirits and confront the vengeful ghost of Kirie. She manages to free her brother and escape the mansion, but not before learning the dark secrets of the Himuro family and the tragic fate of Kirie and Yuu.

Overall, Fatal Frame 1 is a classic horror game that tells a chilling tale of a haunted mansion and the vengeful spirits that haunt it. It uses Japanese folklore and mythology to create a unique and terrifying atmosphere, and the game's central mechanic of using the Camera Obscura to capture ghosts adds a unique element to the gameplay.
