The Fault in Our Stars director is set to once again explore teenage angst, but this time of the mutant kind. Today’s episode of Clevver News Feed is brought to you by Pitch Perfect 2, in theaters May 15th! After successfully adapting John Green’s popular The Fault In Our Stars for the big screen and turning a $12 million film into a worldwide hit with over $300 million at the box office, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has closed a deal with director Josh Boone to co-write and direct a New Mutants movie, which will be a spinoff of the studio’s ever-expanding X-Men franchise. Like The Fault in Our Stars, the New Mutants will focus on a group of teenagers, but instead of dealing with cancer, they must deal with mutant powers and all the good and bad that come from them. No word yet on which characters could potentially appear in the film or which timeline it will occur in, but some comic book members of the team were introduced in last year’s Days of Future Past including Blink, Sunspot and Warpath in the future timeline. It is also possible that the team could consist of the 80’s version of original X-Men characters like Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler and Angel, which will be introduced as teenagers in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Boone will write the screenplay along with Jackass alum Knate Gwaltney and X-Men: Apocalypse writer/producer Simon Kinberg will produce the film with Lauren Shuler Donner. Regarding Boone directing the film, Kinberg said quote, “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.” As for when we can expect to see the New Mutants unite on the big screen, don’t expect it to happen anytime soon. Boone is reportedly next set to direct The Vampire Chronicles for Universal based on the Anne Rice novels followed by the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand for Warner Bros. Of course there will be plenty of ¬X-Men movies to tie us over. In addition to Apocalypse, next year brings standalone Deadpool and Gambit movies followed by a third Wolverine movie in 2017. So, who’s excited for The New Mutants movie and is Josh Boone a good choice to direct and which characters would you like see included in the roster?
