Socialists had ditferent visions of the future. Some believed in the idea of cooperatives. Robett Owen (17771-1858) a beading English manufacturet sought to build a cooperative commanity catled New Harmony in Indiars (US4) Other socialists felt that cooperatives could not be built on a wide scale only through individual iritiative: they demanded thas governments encourage cooperatives. In France, for instance, Louis Blase (2813-1882) wanted the government to encourage cooperatives and replace capialist enterprises. Capitalists owned the capital invested in factories, and the procit of capitalists was produced by workers. The condisoens of workers could not improve as long as this profit was accuamulased by private capitalists. Woekers had to overthrow capitalism and the nule of private peoperty. Marx believed that to free themselves from capoialist eaploitation, workers had to coestruct a radically socialist society where all peoperty was socially controlled.
